Pleasant City is a beautiful town in the Midwestern U.S., with lots of outdoor recreational areas and cute boutiques. The city boasts a diverse population, the excellent Pleasant Private Academy, and a high number of Evangelical churches.
On Rowland Drive live the part-time authors of this blog, Claire Fleming and Izumi Takagawa. Best friends for years, they love writing about and photographing their town and adventures.
Clarissa "Claire" Lalaith Fleming, age 12
Wants to be: a small business owner
Loves to eat: macaroni and cheese
Likes to watch: action/adventure
Favorite book: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Racial background: Irish/English
Claire would love nothing better than to live the rest of her life in a tree house. Camping, hiking, tree-climbing--if it's done outside, it's probably in her blood. She would prefer to be a professional adventurer when she grows up, but since Indiana Jones isn't currently looking for a sidekick, she'd like to open a sporting goods store.
She loves reading--especially comics--and playing with her cat, Taffy. She sometimes writes blog posts about the adventures she has with her best friends, Izumi (who lives next door) and Evangeline, how much she misses her brother, Jack (who lives with their mother in West Virginia), and the American Girl dolls she loves (she has the historical Nellie O'Malley that she's renamed Helena).
Izumi Irissë Takagawa, age 12
Wants to be: photographic journalist
Loves to eat: sashimi
Likes to watch: shonen anime
Favorite book: Fullmetal Alchemist
Racial background: Japanese
Izumi and her parents moved from Tokyo, Japan to Pleasant City when she was ten, leaving her little sister, Kaori, to stay with their grandparents while she finishes elementary school. It's very important to Izumi that she keeps her birth culture and American identity in balance, so she works hard at keeping up with news from both of her countries. This pastime has given her a love of photography and investigation, and she'd like to bring both fields together as a career one day.
Izumi loves exploring with her best friends, Claire and Evangeline, but her favorite adventures lie in cities and how the people that live in them interact with their environment. She likes reading manga and taking pictures of her friends having fun, and can't wait until her parents let her have an Instagram account.
Evangline Tauriel, age 12
Wants to be: fantasy author
Loves to eat: roast beef
Likes to watch: fantasy miniseries
Favorite book: The Hobbit
Racial background: Welsh
Evangeline is a shy, quiet girl who would rather follow along with her best friends, Claire and Izumi, than lead them around. It's not that she has no ideas or anything to say--she just prefers watching and listening. Her peaceful yet fragile nature keeps her from appearing physically in Claire's blog... at least for now.
Evangeline likes nothing better than curling up in her favorite chair with a mug of chai and reading fantasy novels heavier than her, so much that she secretly harbors a dream of becoming a fantasy author herself one day. If only she can get over her shyness enough to submit a manuscript!
Celebrian "Anne" Aine Fleming, age 14
Wants to be: SAHM
Loves to eat: ice cream
Likes to watch: period dramas
Favorite book: Sense and Sensibility
Racial background: English/Irish
Anne lives a few streets away from Claire, but the distance isn't enough to keep her from mothering her younger cousin. Though Claire doesn't mind getting a little dirty for the sake of adventure, Anne's adventures are the sort that involve mastering how to be a lady... and how to keep her siblings out of trouble. These skills are only ever helping her towards her goal of one day being a well-educated stay-at-home-mother and wife.
Kirsten Freda Larson, age 11
Wants to be: undecided
Loves to eat: cheese
Likes to watch: historical documentaries
Favorite book: Ivanhoe
Racial background: Swedish
Kirsten is an introverted girl at Pleasant Academy whose quietness belies her amazing public speaking ability. Won through hard work, her excellence at speech has led her to start a debate club, in which Izumi sometimes participates.
A house near the school was just bought, and some report seeing girl's furniture being carried in. Could a new girl be moving into the neighborhood?
